A FEATURE FILM IN DEVELOPMENT

In 2016, a machine defeated one of the greatest living Go players

Go is one of the world’s oldest board games — far more complex than chess and regarded as an art form in Asia

This is the story of what it feels like to be outthought by a machine

Adapted from the celebrated stage production, AlphaGo_Lee. Theory of Sacrifice turns the iconic 2016 human vs. AI match into a psychological thriller — a real-world Black Mirror examining modern sacrifice rituals.

A live audience of 200 million

A seismic global event, unmatched in reach and cultural impact

The historic David-and-Goliath battle between 9-dan Lee Sedol and the AlphaGo program was staged by a start-up to impress stockholders and pry open the Chinese market for Western Big Tech. It became the spark that ignited a global AI arms race. The moment AI asserted its autonomy. The dawn of the Novacene — a radical new era born of humanity’s sacrifice.

FROM ACCLAIMED STAGE PLAY TO THE SCREEN

“I watched without being able to look away for a single moment. Many colleagues were surprised and deeply shaken — something incredibly fresh and new.
This is a show that will stay in my memory for a lifetime”

Member of the audience, BPAF 2026 (Busan International Performing Arts Festival)

Written and directed by Natalia Korczakowska, Artistic Director of STUDIO teatrgaleria Warsaw, the play premiered in Warsaw, returned by popular demand, and went on to open the Busan International Performing Arts Festival in South Korea.

No digital utopia, no shining future, justifies the sacrifice of a single innocent life.
This film is an act of refusal — an X-ray of the world we are building.

We are being conditioned to trade our “inefficient” human souls for the statistical precision of machines — systems indifferent to beauty, struggle, and the 10% error rate on an automated kill list.

“AlphaGo_Lee. Theory of Sacrifice” exposes this insanity.

I have travelled to Seoul, Tokyo and London to speak with witnesses of the match, overwhelmed by the beauty of Go, the oldest board game in the world and a vital part of Asian culture cultivated for centuries. It mirrors human and societal interactions, illuminates world geopolitics, and teaches that sacrifice is often necessary for growth.

I retraced the match at the Four Seasons in Seoul and stepped inside Google DeepMind as the first person invited to test their AI playwriting system. Alongside research partnerships across the Korean, Japanese, and British Go Federations and the NYC Chess Forum, I connected with KAIST, the site where Google DeepMind head Demis Hassabis delivered his iconic lecture declaring their mission: ‘Solve intelligence, then use it to solve everything else.’

Only I can tell this story about a theatrical PR event designed to signal a new world order that created the biggest AI bubble in history.
